STARGAZING IN THE DESERT

One experience that never disappoints in the desert is kicking back and watching the heavens at night.  Palm Springs has protected the natural beauty of the night sky with the restriction of streetlamps.  One of the best stargazing spots in the valley is the jacuzzi at Descanso Resort.  But if you wish to venture out and enjoy this amazing and ancient experience, here are some options for you:

Sky-Watcher Star Tours

Enjoy a 2-hour guided tour in Joshua Tree National Park.   They provide everything you need for a quality experience: chairs, giant pillows, a 10” telescope, binoculars, refreshments, and knowledgeable guides to educate you on the night sky!

Here are a few spots that we enjoy for a private viewing scene:

  • Coachella Valley Preserve is located just a short distance from Palm Springs in Thousand Palms. There are plenty of spots away from the road for your viewing pleasure.  And you get bragging rights that you spend time stargazing with the San Andreas Fault just under your feet!
  • Just east of Palm Springs, you will find Sky Valley, California.  The main thoroughfare through Sky Valley is Dillon Rd, and there are several safe spots to stop and enjoy the view and understand just how appropriate the name is!
  • Joshua Tree National Park has several spots you can access without hiking at night but offers stunning views.  The National Park Service has made it part its of mission the preservation of the dark night skies.
  • Whitewater Canyon Preserve is located north of Palm Springs and boasts several areas to pull off for stargazing.
